About Chandrashila

Chandrashila is the peak of Tungnath peak. It literally means 'Moon Rock'. It is situated at an altitude of about 4,000 meters above sea level. This peak provides a splendid view of the Himalayas and gives a different feel in itself. Notably Nanda Devi, Trishul, Kedar peak, Bandar Pancha and Chowkhamba peaks. The trek to Chandrashila is very popular among tourists. The journey to the peak is 5 kilometers long. The trek route starting from Chopta leads to Tungnath (the tallest Shiva temple in the world); From here, it is a kilometer long and a steep trek. However the short, steep climb in the distance makes this trek hard.

The history of this place is associated with various legends. According to a popular legend, this is the place where Lord Rama meditated after defeating the demon-king Ravana. Another legend says that the moon god Chandra spent time here in penance.

The trek is run throughout the year, although snowfall during the winter season makes the trek difficult as the road to Chopta is closed. Trekkers use a different route during this period (Deoria Tal - Duggalbitta - Tungnath - Chandrashila).

It is said that whoever goes to Chandrashila has a different feeling which makes him feel his ancestors.
